No one will be refused urgent or emergency treatment.
- New Zealand citizens or those with permanent residence are entitled to publicly funded healthcare
- Non-residents will not be refused treatment
- You may be required to pay for your healthcare
People eligible for free healthcare
- New Zealand citizens and permanent residents
- Work permit holders here for two years or more
- Specific categories of students
- Refugees and asylum seekers
- Australian and UK citizens who become acutely unwell
- The eligibility team are the only people able to confirm a patient’s eligibility or costs
- A patient’s name and date of birth may be submitted to the NZ Immigration Service to allow confirmation of their immigration status
